Fall 2024 scholarship winner is Kristen Randolph
University of Oklahoma
Kristen became interested in sonography early in life. Born with a genetic metabolic disorder and an associated heart condition, she experienced regularly scheduled echocardiograms while growing up. “I was fascinated by the process and would always watch the screen as the technician explained the blood flow through the heart,” said Kristen, “When I began college, I knew I wanted a career in the medical field and began looking into the process of becoming an ultrasound technician.”
Kristen first pursued a bachelor’s degree in physiology from Oklahoma State University, which she completed in three years. She then applied to the University of Oklahoma’s sonography program and was one of eight accepted.
Kristen looks forward to interacting with patients from all walks of life and thinks she will enjoy the hands-on nature of ultrasound. “I understand that one of the challenges of this career is discovering bad news and that there will be other challenges to face in this field. But I know that OU’s sonography school will give me the tools I need to overcome them,” she said.
Kristen plans to graduate in May 2026 and work for a cardiac clinic doing echocardiograms—just like the ones she experienced growing up. She plans on putting her scholarship funds toward her coursework.
